| Cathryn Miles |
Cathryn received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Printmaking from the Atlanta College of Art. She later received her Master of Fine Arts in Painting and Drawing from the University of Houston. Presently, she resides in Roswell and paints in her home studio. In addition, she teaches at Kennesaw State University.
The imagery in Cathryn`s work, whether structural, figurative or landscape, is ambiguous in terms of detail. Her intuitive approach to the use of shapes, lines and patterns results in a dreamlike quality suggestive of a distant memory or a moment out of time.
Cathryn works from quick on-site sketches and watercolors and then builds the compositions in her studio. Each painting is started with a loose, gestural framework, which is filled in with numerous layers of paint. The resulting surface quality is very rich with visible brush strokes that are part of both subject matter and process. Edges of underlying layers of paint are allowed to show through in order to enhance the texture and to create subtle directional lines.
